The Department of Hygiene of Kharkiv University traces its origins to the 1870s, when it was established within the Medical Faculty and began its dynamic development. Arkadii Ivanovych Yakobii, Mykhailo Fedorovych Popov, Arkadii Oleksandrovych Raievskyi, Pavlo Mykolaiovych Liashchenkov, Stepan Vasylovych Korshun, and Volodymyr Volodymyrovych Favr—these distinguished scholars, professors, and privat-docents of our Faculty—laid the foundations for the study of hygiene at Kharkiv Imperial University and for scientific research in this field. Without these names and their scientific and pedagogical contributions, it would be impossible to envisage the revival and contemporary development of our Department.
Until 2008, the academic disciplines of Hygiene, Social Medicine, and Nutrition were taught within the Department of General and Clinical Immunology and Allergology, headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Mykola Mykolaiovych Popov. Disciplines such as Medical Informatics and the European standards of computer literacy were delivered by the Department of Computer, Technical, and Mathematical Modelling in Medicine, which existed from 1998 to 2008 and was headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Oleksandr Vitaliiovych Martynenko.
The Department of Hygiene and Social Medicine was officially established on 8 December 2008 (Order No. 3501-1/059 of 10 July 2008) as part of the restoration of the Medical Faculty (formerly the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine).
The first Head of the Department was Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Heorhii Mykolaiovych Danylenko, who led the Department until June 2018. He is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in the field of child and adolescent hygiene and currently serves as Director of the State Institution “Institute for Children and Adolescents Health Care of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.”
In June 2018, the Department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Zhanna Vladyslavivna Sotnikova-Meleshkina, who served in this role until August 2023.
From September 2023, the duties of Head of the Department were performed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Senior Researcher Nataliia Hennadiivna Mikhanovska, who officially assumed the position of Head of the Department of Hygiene and Social Medicine in November 2024. She is a well-known and highly qualified specialist in the field of child and adolescent mental health..

For practical, laboratory, and seminar classes, the Department has a number of teaching rooms furnished with multimedia equipment, as well as the necessary posters and schematic materials. The educational process consistently incorporates modern instruments for assessing population health and environmental quality. A Student Scientific Society has been established at the Department and functions successfully; its members have repeatedly presented their research with distinction at student scientific and practical conferences.
The Department continuously expands its activities both within Ukraine and internationally. Ongoing collaboration with the University of Aberdeen (UK) includes joint work on the project “Heart Rate Variability: Nonlinear Analysis” within the Microsoft Azure Research program. The Department also participates in the IBM Academic Initiative and maintains cooperation with the University of Barcelona (Spain), Roma University (Italy), and the University of Aberdeen (UK), with which agreements have been concluded on experience exchange, scientific collaboration, and the conduct of joint research projects.
