More than 180 students, researchers and medical professionals from Ukraine took part today in the kick-off event of the online lecture series "Tuberculosis and other Infectious Diseases", which the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center, has launched together with international colleagues to support the V.N Karazin Kharkiv National University, an official partner of the Research Center Borstel.
For the next 5 months, leading scientists from Germany, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland and the USA will provide a series of weekly online lecture on the topics of tuberculosis, HIV, COVID 19 and viral hepatitis to support the partners in Ukraine. "We asked the University in Kharkiv whether and where there was a demand and developed a series of lectures based on their needs. In times of war, it is very difficult to maintain teaching on site, so we wanted to help and make a small contribution," says Prof. Christoph Lange, Medical Director at the FZB.
Dr. Olha Konstantynovska, tuberculosis physician in Kharkiv and associate professor at the V.N Karazin Kharkiv National University, will accompany and support the event on site. Dr. Konstantynovska was a Visiting Professor at the Research Center Borstel last summer and reported on the impact of the war in Ukraine on her patient care as part of the annual „DZIF Clinical Tuberculosis" course. Her presentation made a strong impression and made it clear that every bit of help counts to support Ukranian physicians, scientist and the academic infrastructures.
