The Department of Cardiology was opened in 1979, its organization was entrusted to the associate professor of the Department of Therapy No 3 Shustval N.F. From 1979 to 1988, the Department of Cardiology was located on the basis of the City hospital No 28 of the Kievskiy district, and in 1988 it was transferred to the base of the newly built Medical-sanitary unit of the Kharkov Tractor Engine Plant (now the City Clinical Hospital No 8). In 1995, the Department of Cardiology was renamed to the Department of Cardiology and Functional Diagnostics.
Since 2000, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Full Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, professional member of European Society of Cardiology, Board Member of the All-Ukrainian Association of Cardiologists of Ukraine, Chairman of the Kharkiv Organization of the All-Ukrainian Association of Cardiologists of Ukraine, Honorary Doctor of the V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Vira Yosypivna Tseluyko.
The department annually conducts specialization courses in Cardiology and Functional diagnostics, thematic improvement on the topics "Clinical ECG in the practice of a medical doctor", "Cardiomyopathies and inflammatory heart diseases", "Cardiovascular pathology and pregnancy", "ECG in emergency conditions", "Thrombotic complications in cardiology ", etc. More than 7 thousand students have been trained at the department, and about 500 doctors from different regions of Ukraine undergo training during the year. More than 100 foreign clinical residents and postgraduates from 21 countries of the world have studied at the department.
The work of the department staff is constantly diracted to improvement ofeducational, scientific, therapeutic and diagnostic activities.
Department of Cardiology appeared in the structure of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University in 2021 and the department name was changed from "Cardiology and Functional diagnostics" to "Cardiology, Laboratory and Functional diagnostics".
